Paradox KB: Paradox & ObjectPAL Topic

I wanted to check out if there was a 64 bit Paradox for Windows. I believe this database tool is excellent especially in defining a database.

Paradox has a built-in report writer that will suffice for nearly all reports you wish to create. You base a report on one or more tables or on a query. It uses a banded approach so you think in terms of records, pages, and report. Except for the record band, each section has a header and a footer. Paradox also offers a quick report which is useful for printing data quickly.

Some virus programs are reporting a virus in the 1998 file axdistex.exe:

Use a file server (not a workstation) to store your data, disable Oplocks on the filer server, and configure the BDE (local share to true and optimize if desired). Finally, if workstations are crashing, fix em so they don't. You want clean running computers that don't crash.

Bottom line is you should skip Vista and either stick with XP or move to Win 7. If you have to use Vista, you might be better off with Paradox 9.

The Solution

As with getting most legacy applications to work correctly on Terminal Server, getting the BDE to work is a matter of rights. Once rights are setup, you can then configure the BDE.

There are many ways to solve these specific rights errors. One easy solution if you trust the users using the terminal server is to add them as administrators to the terminal server. An elegant way to accomplish this if you're using Active Directory is to add your user group to the Administrators group of the terminal server.

Does Corel Paradox for Windows run on Vista? If so, are there any issues? What about Windows 7?

For maximum compatibility, use compatibility mode and adjust settings (640x480, and run in a Window, etc.).

This is a simple discussion of a technique I use to create new Paradox reports quickly that are similiar to existing ones, yet functionally different in their purpose. Screen shots are included to illustrate the method I utilize.

Some time ago I created a calendar form that I have been using instead of attaching to Microsofts calendar. This calendar works better for me than the OCX version from Microsoft did, so I thought that I would share it with you.

Paradox for Windows has two primary file types: source files and delivered files. Source files in Paradox are binary but can can be opened in later versions of Paradox and even in earlier versions if you don't use any new features: .FSL = Form, .RSL = Report, .SSL = Script, and .LSL = Library. Since Paradox source files do not compile to an EXE, Paradox developers tend to use a startup form or script to start the application.

Language Overview: Object based language. Although ObjectPAL uses object oriented techniques "under the hood", it is not object oriented. Although you cannot create classes, ObjectPAL has built-in objects you can use in your code. You code in a traditional approach attaching code to objects or within a script. Most Paradox applications are form based. You may have a short startup script but you design forms and reports and tie them together with a common form. You can store reusable code such as custom methods and procedures in a library.

Target Platforms: Corel Paradox is most suitable for creating business desktop applications that run within Corel Paradox for Windows.

Paradox offers a built-in reporting tool that will suffice for most desktop database applications.

I recently upgraded to Windows XP and now Paradox 11 cannot open SQL Server database tables. In the open-dialog-box, I see the aliases, but cannot select one which is linked to a SQL server database. The same thing happens, trying to create a QBE query, new form, etc... All existing queries, forms, ... are working (using these aliases).

Paradox does not remember desktop settings. I just installed Paradox 11 on a new computer and my working directory and other settings do not stick when I restart Paradox. Why?

The directory location of the Paradox network control file PDOXUSRS.NET. The active NET DIR parameter is stored in the Paradox section of the BDE configuration file and has precedence over any other NET DIR parameters that may be stored in older 16-bit configuration files, or in the System Init section of the current configuration file, or in the Registry. These other NET DIR entries will have no effect. To access a Paradox table on a network drive, the active NET DIR parameter in the Paradox section of the BDE configuration file must point to a network drive and folder in common to all users.

This article describes an objectPAL reporting program I made that accepts a purchase order date range and a non-purchase order date range. It will report customers who bought during the purchase time period, but not during the non-purchase time period. The purpose of this report is to reveal those customers with declining sales. If you have an existing Paradox system you can keep using it but you'll need to skip the Vista operating system and either stick with Windows XP or move to Windows 7. Because better tools exist, you may very well want to put a plan together now for converting to another development tool or at least understand what the future is likely to hold. If you're a power-user or researcher working with data, stick with Paradox.

This is the default style sheet that ships with Paradox 10 and 11+. It's a nice clean style sheet so I'm making it available here for Paradox 9 and earlier users who wish to use it.

According to current information on the official Corel X4 home page, WPO X4 ships with Paradox 11 SP2 and still does not support Vista. Yet.
