I found a press release today on the Corel site from about a month ago with this interesting sentence:

In addition, Corel has also released a special update for Paradox X4 that optimizes the database application to work with Windows Vista.

and later on

In addition to downloading and installing SP1, customers who wish to run WordPerfect Office X4 Professional including Paradox X4 on Windows Vista should contact Corel to request a specific Paradox update that optimizes the software to work with Microsoft's latest operating system. Offered on CD, the update is available free to registered users in North America by contacting Corel Customer Support at 1-800-772-6735.

I only have X3 and I don't yet have Vista. Has anyone got the update and tried it?

whole press release - http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Content/1153321430604?pressId=1229440480602

I haven't asked for it yet. I will do that in the next few days because if that's true, that would be awesome!

Hi James,

Keep calling! I haven't had time yet, but I will try to find time this week. If I can get them to allow me to distribute it from my website, that would be very cool. I assume they just don't want to use the bandwidth.

>>...I only have X3...

I don't think that should matter since it's the exact same Paradox 11 build 11.0.0.411 version and needed for Vista users. Also, they have periodically put a notice like that on their website so in a sense, they are obligated to provide it for all Paradox 11 users if they want to have happy Paradox customers.

Great job guys! Can't wait to get my hands on it. {#geek}

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. The fact of the matter is that it works on XP and not well-enough on Vista. Bottom line. Should Corel take the lead and fix it? Sure, but that doesn't mean it wasn't caused by Microsoft.

Darn! Let's hope they do it this time. The problem is they've made statements like this for several years. I hope they to though.

Wow, new build version. Very very interesting. That implies they have something of a development team back together.

Can't wait to find out what their response is.

Hi Steve,

Boy, I hope you're wrong but let me explain my statement. (I'm sure you hope you're wrong too!)

I'm a "glass is half full" type person and the goal is to move the product forward. I know Corel has talented developers on staff. My assumption is that those talented developers are not authorized to spend the time needed to dig into the code and move the product forward. My hope is that Corel will start authorizing some time. Having even a single developer spend time fixing minor issues is a good sign.

I understand your position that Corel has introduced some problems in the past, but I personally encourage them to move forward even with a small development effort to fix defects and compatibility issues. After all, Paradox version 10 and 11 are not products worthy of using (in my opinion) so why not encourage development. If I'm wrong and they produce something "bad", well...no harm done because Paradox as it stands now is on a path into oblivion!

I don't want to upset you or argue, my point is that either they release a Vista compatible fix or not. The fact that they are trying, in my opinion, is good. That's all. The rest of this is just some comments.

>>Paradox and the BDE are DEAD.. they are NOT just resting.. (grin)

Understood. I find it interesting that CodeGear is shipping a BDE merge module with Delphi 2009 (I just got mine recently). Granted, it's from 2001, but it's at least shipping! Laughing

>>theorizing the effort needed to dig back into Paradox and/or the BDE.. the
>>consensus was MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in research, changes, testing, deployment,
>>marketing, etc.

Yes, I agree. If we're talking about doing a full job. However, I would be happy with bug fixes, compatibility fixes, and minor enhancements such as import routines. If they ignore the BDE (meaning continue to use the latest) and stay within certain areas (such as within data imports and a few other areas), it can be done for alot less. However, it would still run into the hundreds of thousands easily to do a proper limited job.

>>...all for a market that is shrinking every day.

Yeah, I agree. Compared to the billions of dollars that's in corporate and government database development, the desktop database market is small. Very small. I know for a fact that there is still a market for desktop databases with small businesses/entrepreneurs, power-users within large corporations, power-user hobbyists, researchers working with data, etc. My opinion is that if Corel markets to those users, they can turn Paradox into a profitable product for them. Yes, it's not a general development tool and it would be incredibly difficult to even try to compete for the big prize of corporate and government development, but, who knows what the future holds!

With that said, you're still probably right. Cry There are reasons why I do most of my coding these days in Delphi, C#, and VB.Net.

You argue, no never. Cool and...to be clear, I very much appreciate your participation here.

I've been replying to email this morning about this thread and a common thought has popped up:

"It's a business decision as to whether they put money into Paradox but I honestly think Paradox could be a profitable product for them directly and add value to their product line (read, indirect profit)."

I like that thought because it conveys a "state of reputation" that's at stake here. How many Paradox developers have avoided "all" Corel products because of this? How many other people have they told to stay away from Corel? Anyway, just hoping for the best for Corel.

Hi JT or DavidC:

Any update? I realize this thread got hi-jacked a bit and diverted, but I wanted to know if you received any feedback at all from Corel regarding your input or any luck with the exit error.

>>...Corel might consider releasing Paradox to the Open Source community...

I'm not sure why Steve said that would be insane. It's just a suggestion. He has strong opinions. Cool Usually valid, but tact is not his strong suit. Wink

My {#twocents} follows. In general, I'm not a fan of open source software as I think having a profitable business model driving a product will lead to better success for the product. Just a guess, but I think the main problem Corel is having is figuring out what that valid business model is and then believing in it.

I'm a strong proponent that there is a market for desktop databases and that's what Paradox is. And, it's a damn good one and there are millions of desktop database power-users around the world. Corel might recognize that too and they may even have discussed potential business models for moving the product forward in a profitable manor. However, either they don't have faith in their own ability to execute a chosen plan, don't have the money, or havn't found the right business plan for them. (Or perhaps something else I can't think of.)

Given that, what's going on then? I don't know but my guess is either they are "resting" the product until they can figure out what to do or find a buyer, or they are just going to keep selling it so they can "pretend" like they are trying to compete with MS Office Professional Edition (with MS Access). Under that scenario, they could arrange with Borland to release Paradox to open source sometime in the future. True, it would have to rely on the latest BDE as is, but anyting is possible. My hope is that they figure out a business plan to move this good desktop database forward and start rebuilding the Paradox desktop database market.

Paradox will never compete with general development tools like C++, Java, Delphi, and VS.Net, but it isn't a general development tool, it's a desktop database that competes with Access, Filemaker Pro, Alpha Five, dBASE, FoxPro, etc. In fact, even though no development has occured with Paradox for years, it frequently appears on top 10 desktop databases lists!

>>I just installed Windows 7 beta, and Paradox 11.0.0.411 and have been playing with it for an hour or so.  No error on close!   Everything seems to be working.

Excellent news! I haven't installed Windows 7 on anything yet, just not enough time in the day. But, I am hopeful that Windows 7 will fix many things that Vista broke for many applications. After all, Microsoft has stated very clearly that Vista was a mistake and Windows 7 is addressing several key areas including compatibility with older programs, footprint, and stability. In my opinion, since Paradox runs fine on XP, the problems with Paradox 10/11 on Vista is a Microsoft problem. Not a Corel problem. That doesn't mean Corel shouldn't fix them, they should, but I am hopefully about Windows 7.

Although this may sound strange, you can downgrade to Paradox 9. Paradox 9 is a better build (less problems) than 10 and 11. Although I keep most versions of Paradox installed, I recommend to our clients to stick with Paradox 9 for now.

You are right Mike. I do keep Paradox 9, 10, and 11 installed because we work on apps for all those versions for our clients. In general, when we do have a Paradox 10 or 11 client, they are pretty happy with the product and just work around any issues that pop up.

Hi Grant,

Any luck testing out Paradox on Win 7 and Server 2008? The tests I've done here so far look very promising even in Win 7 native mode. I haven't had to use the XP mode yet.

Ian.M

HI all

My first post here although I have been a Paradox user since Paradox for Windows (or maybe earlier).  I'm a surgeon so I'm only an amateur as far as Object Pal is concerned but over the years I have developed a cool database for my clinical projects.  Now it's too hard to learn anything else!

So - new computer with Windows7 so may as well get the latest version - X5.  A few things from Pdx 9 no longer work but we can get around those.

Biggest problem - GPF whenever I tried to print.  Rang Corel - at least they will talk to us here in Australia, but I don't think the young lady could understand the problem.

Eventually followed the posts here to find out what happened with X4 and Voila - on the support page there is now a hotfix for X5.

It's:

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Content/1153321224268?pid=1208716792720

Applied the hotfis and now I can print!  Pity that Corel cupport didn't know it existed and/or didn't let me know when it appeared.

(Thank God I don't have to turn around and learn Filemaker!)

Hello...

I am currently on Paradox 10.

I am trying to move my Paradox programs to a Windows Server 2008 computer.

Now, when exiting Paradox, I am getting the dreaded error message below:

Paradox for Windows Desktop has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Does anyone know if Paradox X4 (i.e. the lastest Paradox 11 release) with recent patches solves this problem and allow Paradox to exit without the error message?

Thanks, Russell Wyatt

Thanks for info.

My major problem is I execute Paradox 10 scripts during nightly batch cycles.  This error message is a show stopper for me.

So, I was wonder if latest release of X4 fixed the Error on Exit???

Also...does Paradox 9 work better?  If yes, then how do I get Paradox 9 ( I am on Paradox 10!).

Thanks, Russell Wyatt

Just for grins I tried to install the new X4 service pack that is posted on their website to see if it would touch Paradox - and it doesn't.

I'll try to contact them about the patch also. The CD-only distribution seems a bit odd - almost makes me think it might contain some third party patch(es) - meaning Microsoft.

Peace,

I was able to get through on the support line this evening. The guy didn't even know there was a fix :-)

After he consulted with someone, he discovered it did exist, but claims it only works on Paradox X4.

After I protested he handed my off to a technical guy. The tech guy never quite admitted it that it would work with previous versions, but said its their policy to only ship it for X4 users. He also seemed to think it would eventually be posted to the website.  He did promise to talk with some other folks to see if they might be able to send it to me anyway - I'm supposed to get a response by email within a day or two.

Peace,
David Cheney

Despite the promise of a reply within two days - I have not heard anything.

Has anyone tried Paradox under Win7? I assume it has the same issue, but it would be nice to have that verified.

Corel has issued a "HotFix" for the printing issue in Paradox for Vista.

To add to the confusion, it apparently doesn't update the version number, but leaves it at .663 and it only works on .663

I hope Paradox works better under Win7 - only about 2 more months before I have to buy a new laptop!

The patch "WordPerfect Office X4 Paradox Hot Fix 1 EN/FR" is a fix for the fix that is only available on CD. To further add confusion, it apparently doesn't change the version (11.0.0.663).

The most recent version without the CD fix is 11.0.0.411.

Supposedly this hot fix corrects the major printing issues that the CD fix introduced.

(I have not testing the CD fix or its related hot fix - but I'm in the process of buying a new computer, so I may have some updated info in a few weeks.)

Peace,
David Cheney

Have tried calling the 1-800-772-6735 listed in the bulletin and no one ever answers. Have tried calling for 3 days (Thurs, Fri and Mon). have finally sent a E-mail support question, but no answer yet. Will wait another 3 days and then try calling their sales dept. Hope someone has better luck.

It appears you had better luck that myself. Tried calling all day today (1-13) to 1-800-772-6735 still no answer. Finally tried 1-877-682-6735, their sales office. It also just rang with no answer, not even automated. They have very poor customer service. I guess it's about time to migrate to Access.

Was finally able to get through. According to Corel there phone system has been out for awhilw and was just repaired. Talk to Customer service and the fix does have to be installed from a disk for only those registered users. When I talked to them this AM (01-19-09) they said the disk for the fix is not ready yet. They think it will be 2 weeks and they will contact me by E-Mail about ordering it.

Was notified this morning (1-10), that Corel shipped a replacement disk for WP X4 Pro with service packs. They sent it via Fedex with tracking. I guess they were ready sooner than the 2 weeks they told me over the phone.

Received the CD'd from Corel and reinstalled Paradox after uninstalling. The version was old one, so i called Corel tech services. It appears they sent the worng disc. I received 3 in the mail, which was the original install from March of last year. They told I should have received just one disc and it would be label WP office X-4 Service pack 1. Now they are sending the update again by FedEx. Should have it in another week or so.

I received the update from Corel WPX4 for Paradox on Windows Vista. Did a clean install, now version 11.0.0.663, But I'm afraid am still getting the dreaded "Paradox for desktop has stopped working"when exiting. Upon checking it still is showing a program compatibility problem. Am sending this to Corel. This is the error;

No Response from Corel as yet. Have tried the update on 3 different computers with different Vista baselines. All 3 give me the Paradox has stopped working error upon exiting. I have also had some crashes when trying to construct some new forms. It's ashame that Corel has dropped trying to fix the best desktop database, could it be because Oracle and Microsoft have money in invested in Corel. Have been working to migrate 35 databases to SQL server and Oracle.

Have found that when you install the update from corel, the follwing entry is put in the registery.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

Value name:C:\Program Files (x86)\Paradox\Programs\pdxwin32.exe

Value data: WINSRV03SP1 RUNASADMIN

Have tried using compatibility flag for:

Windows Server 2003 SP1

Windows XP SP2

Windows 2000 (Paradox will not open)

Windows NT4SP5 (Paradox will not open)

Windows 98/ME (Paradox will not open)

Windows 95 (Paradox will not open)

No matter which Paradox does not work correctly. It will probably be the same with windows 7. just another good reason to stay with Windows XP Pro.

Corel still has not responded and the question I sent has disappeared from there questions asked sit. Tried the customer service number, but no answer again. Phones must be on the blink again.

OK, I going to be brave next week and attempt to run my Pdox7/Win POS and HTML generator on Windows 7. I have read that if you use a processor capable of Virtualization Technology, it should allow a hardware emulation of XP. I am going to try it natively first. Also am going to upgrade our Server to 2008 SBS. Should prove interesting, and hopefully I'll be able to report success :)

The app is so dang stable on XPPro & 2000 clients, but the guys what the flash of the Windows7. After all, we are a computer store lol.

Not yet Mike. Unfortunately I brought in two copies of SBS2008, one being for a customer, and somehow the idjits at the store seem to have misplaced it. I have another copy on order for us. It's good to hear that you are able to run it in native mode, will certainly impress the guys who constantly laugh at running such an old piece of software.  Just wondering if your success is with the newer versions, and although I own Pdox9, besides the aborted Runtime module (which I really had purchased it for), I have not really deployed it.  What, if any, are the core program changes that may cause me grief?

Hi Steve,

Although it's been a few years since I've played with it, I really had trouble with the reports. I probably am doing something wrong with them. I use them when we genrate quotes & sales orders. IIRC, I think it had to do with using a .rdl file. I haven't been able to use .rdls, and have instead been using .rsls which allows the format to be changed during runtime.

David the update is available on www.corel.com/patches select paradox and then folloe through the download process. There is also a hot patch for X4 users. Since its a visat specific issue it might be worth seeing if the hot patch installes on X3 your call?

Thanks

Just found out after installing the sp2 fix did not fix anything and you are absolutely right.

That then leaves non US users in the cold even if they upgrade to X4, Not a bad thing to do as I'm really anoyed at both Vista's overcomplicated securety environment and pushing of key function another couple of mouse clicks away and Office 2007's ribbon bar which has had me totally re-configuring my tools as there are backward compatible no XP theme for advanced users. I note the professional version inclusive of Paradox is no longer listed on the corel site unless you know of another direct url?

Everything else runs well. Not much use without printing though.

Installed and run with Administrator privileges.

In order to get Paradox version 11.0.0.633, I was obliged to purchase the upgrade from Office X3 to X4.

Having done so & installed Paradox, it appeared to be working perfectly although I still had to resolve the 'pdxregcl' problem in the registry.  One problem still existed (which was also manifest in V11.0.0.411).  When saving forms, occasionally it displayed an error message saying 'unable to create a unique file name' (or words to that effect). Several re-tries usually overcome the problem.  But the annoying shut-down message that Paradox was not working had gone.

Only when I read this thread did I realise that I had not attempted any printing since installing the new version.  You guessed it, I cannot print anything!

I have now reverted to V11.0.0.411 with its annoying end message but at least I can print my reports.

I have used every Paradox version from V2 through V11.  I don't recall ever having problems until Corel got their hands on it.

That's progress for you!!!

(peer to peer, vista to windows 7). Windows 7 already seems very stable.
So perhaps no need to buy X4 or wait for other updates.

I'm glad that things are working out for you Geoff.  However, it is the (supposed) Vista friendly Paradox release X4 (11.0.0.633) that is the problem.  With the X3 release (11.0.0.411), there were only annoying quirks to put up with, but everything worked.  The X4 release is a whole different ball game.  It won't print reports! (Running a report generally caused the program to stop responding).

It is probably not the operating system that is at fault.  If Corel release a product that they described as 'suitable for Vista', then that's exactly what it should be and all functions should work.

Having spent approximately $450 just to get the latest version of Paradox, the least I should expect is to get a product that is of merchantable quality and fit for purpose.

I am about to embark on session with Corel Europe to see what they have to say about this fiasco.  I will post any worthwhile results

Mike

UPDATE:

Corel have released a bug fix PDXHF1.EXE which resolves the printing problem.  It only applies to V11.0.0.633.

I have re-installed V11.0.0.633, applied the hot fix and now find I can print reports.

It does not modify the version number.

It's a shame they couldn't be bothered to tell their customers about it!

I have just worked through the nine options in the 'Publish as' menu and the only one that works is the 'Rich Text Format' option.  Once saved, you can open it with WPX4 (or MS Office 2007).  Works for me.

I know you shouldn't have to do this, but it's a work-around.  That's Corel for you!!

With respect to Mike's suggestion of using Paradox V9.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but having spent $450 (unnecessarily as it turns out) to buy a version that I was lead to believe (by non-other than Corel), resolved the problems of the previous version, entitles me to a little whinge, or even $450 worth of whinge.

I reiterate:  The least I can expect is a product that is of merchantable quality and fit for purpose!

Corel, take note!!!

Enigma Variatio

I am a private, casual user of Paradox (since 1992). I recently bought a pc with Vista and a copy of Paradox 11. I gave up with Vista and now run Paradox 11 in Windows XP running in Virtual Box on a Mac. (I'll develop this more on another thread). On registering my copy of WordPerfect Office I suggested that Corel might consider releasing Paradox to the Open Source community if they were not prepared to continue to support pdoxwin. Perhaps others in this thread could think on this and if in agreement, push Corel. I cannot see any commercial advantage to Corel in continuing to hold on to a product that cannot be purchased separately, which they cannot afford to develop and clearly offer little technical support.

Unfortunately, Windows 7 is no longer available, so I will continue running Paradox 11 in Windows XP within vitualBox mounted on an iMac. The only issue I have with this setup is not being able to save the setup on exit (including working directory) despite defining my preferences.

I look forward to getting rid of Vista at the earliest opportunity, (my new PC sits unused except those times when I am forced to use Internet Explorer) and being able once again to run Paradox on the PC.

Hi Russell,

I perservered with this problem for ages. I have installed the evaluation client
of Windows 7 and this is no longer a problem. Everthing that i used to run
on XP, except for AutoCAD, that would not run on Vista, now works normally.

So, if you have no joy in solving your problem, try Windows 7, releasing in about 8 weeks.
My second answer is, don't worry about it, it's annoying, but it still works.

Otherwise, I hope others have a better answer for you,

Geoff.

That implies they have something of a development team back together.

no, it doesn't.. it just means that somebody re-compiled everything.. they did that when they made the first v11, and there was no "development team".. in fact, that's why they did the re-compile.. there wasn't anyone there with a brain, to tell to NOT do it..

the possibility that they might touch something internal is VERY scarey..

geez, Mike (grin)

Boy, I hope you're wrong but let me explain my statement. (I'm sure you hope you're wrong too!)

to be honest, I do not hope I'm wrong.. I really have no reason to think that Corel would do anything right in this regard.. nobody that had anything to do with Paradox or the BDE is available anymore.. anyone that does ANYTHING will be starting from scratch, with several million lines of code, some of it going all the way back to the DOS Engine..

I have no reason to believe that what they did in those last two SP was internal.. whatever they did, they did it to the suite itself and/or they found some simple way to trap out an error and hide it..

there have been several long discussions over the past few years, theorizing the effort needed to dig back into Paradox and/or the BDE.. the consensus was MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in research, changes, testing, deployment, marketing, etc.. all for a market that is shrinking every day..

Paradox and the BDE are DEAD.. they are NOT just resting.. (grin)

I've been replying to email this morning about this thread and a common thought has popped up:

we hear that all the time on the community forum, too.. then we tell them what you and I just said.. that it'll cost a gazillion dollars to do it.. the number of long-term developers left is only in the thousands.. where do these people think the money is gonna come from?

How many Paradox developers have avoided "all" Corel products because of this?

actually, they avoid the rest of the suite because it's word perfect and quattro, instead of word and excel.. from day one, it's been two completely separate markets.. it's not like in the old DOS days, when the "loyal opposition" wanted Avis instead of Hertz, Pepsi instead of Coke, the Novell Suite instead of Microsoft products..

JT.. sorry to hear your problems.. the real issue, I think, is that we've only had a handful of people attempt this so far, with different results from each.. not enough of a sample to really know what does or doesn't work..

I suggested that Corel might consider releasing Paradox to the Open Source community

that isn't an option.. Corel only licenses Paradox from Borland.. Borland owns the BDE, and will NOT release it.. Corel holds an option to develop the BDE, but that would be insane, for many reasons..

>>...Corel might consider releasing Paradox to the Open Source community...

> I'm not sure why Steve said that would be insane.

gee.. I got mis-quoted..

I said that Corel couldn't release Paradox as open source because the don't own it.. they just license it..

I said the trying to re-engineer the BDE is insane.. maybe you don't like the word I used, but you and I just finished explaining the magnitude of that kind of project..

they are just going to keep selling it so they can "pretend" like they are trying to compete with MS Office Professional Edition (with MS Access).

many of us have pretty much concluded that this is the reason..

Under that scenario, they could arrange with Borland to release Paradox to open source sometime in the future.

the BDE contains about 5 million lines of code and notes.. Paradox is made from about 2 million lines of mostly BDE calls.. if you've got the ten million bucks it'll take to make a "new Paradox", there are plenty of qualified developers willing to jump in..

hey, Yogi.. it's over.. (grin)

Anyone else try this yet (Windows 7 and Paradox)?

that's the root issue here.. I monitor all of the paradox newgroups, and we've had a grand total of about half a dozen total reports of tests of the paradox patch and/or windows 7.. and the results of each have been totally different..

The patch "WordPerfect Office X4 Paradox Hot Fix 1 EN/FR" is a fix for the fix that is only available on CD. To further add confusion, it apparently doesn't change the version (11.0.0.663). Supposedly this hot fix corrects the major printing issues that the CD fix introduced.

funny, not unexpected, but for once we can almost defend Corel for an honest not-fully-tested mistake, because:

a) it's nowhere close to the dumbest thing Corel did.. remember the OEM disks they made (for Dell, HP, whoever it was) where the BDE wanted to put the net file on drive A?

b) it's nowhere near the second-dumbest thing Corel did.. who came up with the idea of a "registry cleaner" that deletes all the setting changes you make, when you exit Paradox?

c) this probably pales in comparison, but the old-timers will remember that the first bug-fix to DOS 4.0 was forevermore known as "the bug fix from hell"

Happy Labor Day, everyone..

although I own Pdox9, besides the aborted Runtime module (which I really had purchased it for), I have not really deployed it.  What, if any, are the core program changes that may cause me grief?

where did you get the idea that there's something wrong with P9 RT?.. ten years, and I've never heard that comment before.. P9 and P9RT are by far the most commonly deployed versions..

Received the CD with Vista enabled Paradox. Running it on Vista SP1 X64. No errors when exiting Paradox, but...

Can't print at all. When printing from OPAL, report goes blank and the print dialog never appears. When printing w/o OPAL the error "LCAppPrint Initialize Failed!". Happens on runtime too.

Everything else runs well. Not much use without printing though.

Installed and run with Administrator privileges.

I personally have less choice between Quattro and Excel as I do between Word and Word Perfect, I prefer Word Perfect.  I would also prefer Corel going back to the day when it had customer service.

From what I can tell reading this thread and searching elsewhere, no one has reported on Paradox and Windows 7.  I just installed Windows 7 beta, and Paradox 11.0.0.411 and have been playing with it for an hour or so.  No error on close!   Everything seems to be working.  I am thinking I will be able to continue putting Paradox to good use for many years to come!  I did have to set up a shortcut that runs as administrator, which means an extra click on a User Account Control dialog that pops up during Paradox startup (same as Vista).  I did get an error on exit the very first time I ran it, but that is the only time.  It wasn't the message I have become accustomed to in Vista, i.e., "Paradox for Windows Desktop has stopped working" with the opportunity to click on "Close the program".  It was another message that I didn't record about a problem encountered during program exit.  Anyway, it seemed to self correct and I haven't seen either message since.  So far I haven't had the need to play with compatability settings.  I couldn't get BDE Administrator to save some of the changes I made when running it from the Control Panel, until I allowed Windows 7 to elevate its privileges.  After that it has been functioning as expected.  (Maybe I should say functioning as hoped!) ProView works as well.

Anyone else try this yet (Windows 7 and Paradox)?

I installed Paradox 9.00.883 on Windows 7 tonight.  I have a Paradox application with over 20,000 lines of ObjectPal and it seems to be working very nicely, no problems sofar.  The first thing I do with Vista or Windows 7 is disable User Account Control.

I just did a similar test with Vista Ultimate SP2 and the application works fine too.

I have used Paradox for many years and was using the Publish report to Wordperfect function (i. e., run an existing report in Paradox, then publish it to Wordperfect).  I recently upgraded to Vista, WPx4, and Paradox 11.  It will not publish a report to Wordperfect.  I have tried numerous times over the last two months to get technical support help from Corel, but all they will tell me is the problem is under review. Does anyone have any thoughts or solution on this.

Thanks so much.  I have been trying to get Corel to do something about this for two months.  At least this will get me by until (if ever) they get it to function directly into Wordperfect x4!  Thanks again.

Print Interface Setup Error . LCAppPrint Initialize failed. I solved my problem by downloading and installing PDXHF1.exe from Corel.com Paradox Hot Fix 1 (PDXHF1.exe (1.01 MB) Notes: This update includes a key fix for WordPerfect Office X5 Paradox. You can apply Hot Fix 1 to Paradox version 11.0.0.676, which is included in certain editions of WordPerfect Office X5. To find out which version of Paradox you currently have installed, click Help > About in Paradox. This hot fix applies only to version 11.0.0.676. Issues This hot fix resolves the inability to print documents, such as tables and reports, from within the application. Before applying Hot Fix 1 for Paradox, you need to: Restart your computer Close all open applications, including any virus-scanning software IMPORTANT: To install this update, the original CD may be required. Please note: each application has a version number. If you want to know the full version number of your installation, click Help, About in any Corel application, or check the volinfo.txt file at the root of Programs CD. Quick Instructions To install this update: Download the update onto your system by saving it to your hard drive. Double-click the installer file to begin the update. Follow the instructions to review the Software License Agreement and complete the install.

I have Paradox 11 running on both W7 &Vista (downtown/home office). I had not connected the frequent file corruption issues I had been experiencing with Vista until recently, believing that the only issue with Vista was the exit annoyance. Having finally figured this out, I followed the links for the X4 upgrades and hot fixes to find that they do not exist. Most lead to an ad to buy Corel Draw, but a couple to a page no longer exists message. I called Corel and was directed to download the X5 patch, which will not install with X4. I would agree with the poster above, that Corel has abandoned this product and simply coasts on what they have had. I am unfortunately stuck with it and will have to upgrade my OS if I want to  be able to work from home. This is pretty shoddy of Corel, to say the least.

Yes. I thought Canadians did everything right.

As I work further with 11 on  I run into increasing difficulties including record lockouts , crashes with error code 216 (usually associated with reports) and data loss.  I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro iin the hopes I could run it under XP, but my equipment doesn't support that. I may upgrade the hardware, too, but am despairing a bit at the moment.Paradox is the lynch pin of my business, and I can't get it over to Access (Documents stored in blob files).

I suspect more people are going to find hidden bombs in the Paradox / Windows 7 interaction.

It is just shoddy that Corel has withdrawn all patches for x3 and x4, which would theoretically force users to purchase X5. The only download left for PX11 is runtime. All legacy downloads are here: ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Paradox/   there is nothing useful.

If anyone has sp 1 and 2 somewhere on disk for X3, I would appreciate having it.

Mike Prestwood, there must be some copies floating around somewhere. You  have the latest BDE. Would it be possible to make them available from this site?

1. Can I install Paradox 10 or 11+ on Vista?

Bottom line is you should skip Vista and either stick with XP or move to Win 7. If you have to use Vista, you might be better off with Paradox 9.
