GoDaddy defederation is the process of separating your existing Microsoft 365 organization from GoDaddy’s federated sign-in and management arrangement.
Instead of creating a completely new Microsoft 365 organization and transferring all your data, the supported transition generally allows you to retain your existing Microsoft 365 tenant while changing how it is administered and licensed. For many businesses, that distinction is especially important.

Can I move Microsoft 365 away from GoDaddy without losing my email?
Yes. A standard supported defederation retains your existing Microsoft 365 tenant and its cloud mailboxes. Prestwood IT helps plan the transition and verify access afterward. We review any unusual configurations or add-on services separately.
Will my business email address change?
No. Your existing email addresses, such as name@yourcompany.com, can remain the same when your existing Microsoft 365 tenant is retained.
What is the difference between GoDaddy defederation and a Microsoft 365 migration?
Defederation changes the management and sign-in arrangement of an existing Microsoft 365 tenant. A full migration moves users and data into a different Microsoft 365 tenant. These are different technical projects with different requirements.
Do I have to move my domain registration or website away from GoDaddy?
No. You may keep your domain registration, DNS management, and website hosting with GoDaddy while managing Microsoft 365 separately.
Will employees need new passwords?
Expect administrative password changes and potentially new sign-in prompts or employee password updates. Prestwood IT helps plan these steps and assist users. Existing multifactor authentication requirements must also be considered.
Will I need to buy Microsoft 365 licenses again?
Yes. GoDaddy-purchased Microsoft 365 licenses do not transfer to Microsoft or another provider. Replacement licensing must be purchased and assigned according to GoDaddy’s supported move process.
Should I purchase new Microsoft 365 subscriptions before moving?
Do not independently purchase new Microsoft 365 mailboxes before the GoDaddy release. Doing so can create a separate tenant that cannot be merged with your existing organization. Prestwood IT can help coordinate licensing at the appropriate stage.
What happens to OneDrive, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams?
In a standard defederation, your existing tenant remains in place, so its cloud data and services remain associated with that organization. We review configurations and verify employee access after the transition.
